You can pack all the bags and kits you want, but until you have full awareness of what is going on you are best waiting. At this same time, many others are going to be getting in their cars and heading out for the gas station, grocery store, drug store and probably liquor store as well. And clogging up the roads.
That means a strong preparation is defending your home, castle and fortress. You should have at least a 3 month supply of basic food items in your home pantry. Lay off the Cheetos. Basics - Rice, beans, dried veggies, canned or dried meats. That means water and if your lucky enough to have a place to store it, get one or two 110 gallon food grade crates. I plan to build a deck over mine.
Some things you should have already prepared your home for. Attack! Not that you have to dig a moat to keep the scrambling peasants out who are trying to take what you have, you should already have basics like secure locks and dead bolts. Now, before the SHTF hits the fan, is when you should be thinking of ways to re-enforce your security.
Emergency transportation. A car or truck aren't always gonna get you there or where you need to be. Alternative means other then walking, but none are totally safe during SHTF, could be mini-bikes or bicycles, or maybe an inflatable raft if you're near a stream. Try to stay ahead of the curve and plan your strategy like a general. Defend your castle!
